Notes - In the book History of Butler County, Pennsylvania (1895) under the biography of Benjamin Johnston it mentions that he has a daughter, Eliza, that married a Mr. Young. In the 1850 Census a Eliza Johnston, age 25, is living with Benjamin Johnston along with a Rosetta (4) and Jane (1) Johnston. In the 1860 Census one can find a Caleb, Elizabeth, and Rozilla (Rosetta?) Young living in Adams Township in Butler County. The record is illegible making it impossible to decipher the names. Continuing through the Census years one finds Caleb and Elizabeth still living in Butler County through 1900 Children - Rozilla (Rosetta?), Susan J, Isaiah, Mary A, Herman, Irvin, Arminta and Lesley. In the PA death certificates one can find a Caleb Young that died 9 Nov 1908 and is buried in the Brownsdale Methodist Cemetery in Butler County. In several of the census records one finds a daughter of Caleb and Elizabeth named Arminta. Based on the PA death certificates a Arminta Lytle died in 1939, spouse Thomas Lytle. The certificate states her father was James Young and that the mother is unknown. In the 1910 Census one can find Thomas and Armetta Lytle (Arminta?) living in Lawrence County along with her mother Elizabeth Young (Note: 1900 Census states she had 8 children, 7 living but 1910 states 3 and 2 living). Looking through PA death certificates one can find a Elizabeth Young that died 29 Jan 1917 in Allegheny County, buried in Brownsdale. This certificates states that her father was Frad/Frank (?) Johnston and mother was Martha Kennedy and that she was widowed. The informant was an Edward Young. If you search for Edward Young in PA death certificates you find an Edward that died in Allegheny County (b. 1861 in PA) in 1923 and had father named Charley Young and mother Elizabeth Johnston. I cannot find in any census a Charles or Charley Young along with a wife Eliza/Elizabeth and son Edward. I’m almost certain the death record is correct as far as last news for Elizabeth Young, I don’t know what the odds are that there is another Elizabeth Young born in 1825 that would have parents names Johnston and Martha Kennedy. The questions are where does Rozilla/Rosetta Johnston/Young come in? She was born before Eliza got married to Caleb based on Census records and in 1850 Caleb is showing as single, living with a John and Nancy Park in the census with no children. If Caleb is truly Eliza Johnston’s husband then where does Edward, the informant on her death certificate and mother on his certificate fit in as none of the Census records of Caleb and Eliza list an Edward? Also, if this is the Eliza Johnston Young, mother of Arminta then why the number difference on children between the 2 censuses. Also, Brownsdale Cemetery is mentioned in Eliza’s death certificate as there are only 2 Brownsdale cemeteries in PA, both in Butler County, www.findagrave.com does not have a record of her in either cemetery and only list 4 Youngs total between them with Caleb being one.
Butler Citizen, 12 Nov 1908 has obit for Caleb Young, not currently online that might lead to more clues. Searching PA death certificates for the other children turns up the following, Herman Young (b. 1861, d. 29 Dec 1931) lists Caleb Young as Father, unknown as Mother.
