    • Research on Ann and Drusella Carrie Pool: (Quarmby and Derringer are used as the common surnames even though marriage and census records use variations of these names)

      In the 1886 marriage record of Ann Pool and Elisha Bridges we find that she is identified the child of Thomas Pool and Rebecca Rush. It also states that Ann’s given name at the time is Ann Derringer and that this is her third marriage. Looking back we find Ann Derringer in the 1880 Census (Vernon Twp, Jennings County, Indiana) living with George and Carrie Hartwell. It states that Ann’s relationship to the head of household, George Hartwell, is mother-in-law. Also living in the same household is Samuel Derringer, listed as brother-in-law to the head of household. In the 1870 Census (Marion Twp, Jennings County, Indiana) one finds Ann and Samuel living with Joseph Derringer along with Susan (16) and Rebecca (10) Derringer and John Quarmby (19). In the 1860 Census (Marion Twp, Jennings County, Indiana) we find Ann and husband Joseph living with Mary (19), Elizabeth (14), Josephus (10), John (9), Susanna (6) and Rebecca (1) Derringer. From Jennings County marriage records we find that an Ann Quarmby married Joseph Derringer on 12 June 1853. Based on this marriage date and 1870 Census records then the following appears true: 1) John(9) is actually John Quarmby as stated in the 1870 Census with further evidence provided in the Jennings County marriage records where a John T Quarmby married Sarah Davis on 22 Aug 1874, 2) Only Rebecca (1) is the child of Ann and Joseph, and 3) Mary, Elizabeth Josephus, and Susanna are John’s children from previous marriages. Looking at the 1850 Census we find Ann Quarmby living with husband John Quarmby along with Denzilla (Drusella) C Quarmby, aged 5. Looking back to the marriage records we find that John Quarmby married Ann Pool on 3 Jun 1849. Looking further back in the marriage records we also find that on 18 Jan 1842 Simon Pool and Ann Pool applied for a marriage license but were never married. In 1860 we find Drusella C Pool living with Ann’s parents Thomas and Rebecca Rush. Although not impossible, if Thomas and Rebecca were Drusella’s parents then Rebecca would have been over 50 at the time of Drusella’s birth and Ann would have been 24. Further evidence is provided in the marriage record of Drusella’s daughter (Amy) where it states that Amy’s parents are George Hartwell and Carrie Quarmby. From this info, I believe that Drusella is the daughter of Ann Pool and granddaughter of Thomas and Rebecca Rush Pool. The only question that arises is that based on the facts presented, Drusella was born before Ann and John Quarmby were married so is John Quarmby the father or could Simon Pool or someone else be the father?
